You already understand more English than you can say
You read it, follow it at work — then freeze when it's time to speak. Samantha closes the gap between understanding English and saying it.
Why it works
The design follows what second-language research actually shows about speaking — not marketing claims. Here's the short version, with the sources.
You understand more English than you can produce — and the gap is wider for non-native speakers
Language researchers separate what you can recognize (receptive knowledge) from what you can retrieve and say (productive knowledge). For second-language learners the gap between them is typically wider, and can even widen as your overall level rises.
Lee 2025, Int'l Journal of Applied Linguistics ↗Producing it — not just taking it in — is what activates English
Research on language “output” finds that putting a thought into a full sentence forces the complete processing that just recognizing words skips. Speaking is that output at its most demanding — real-time, out loud — which is what turns understood English into English you can actually say.
Swain’s output hypothesis (ERIC) ↗It compounds — producing a phrase makes you recognize it faster, too
There’s direct evidence that being able to produce a phrase speeds up comprehending it during listening — about 430 ms faster in one study. So producing English doesn’t just raise the floor; it lifts your ceiling, which opens a new gap to fill. That’s the snowball.
Frontiers in Psychology, 2023 ↗AI has already closed the writing gap
Generative AI now measurably improves written English — grammar, range, and overall quality — so polishing what you write is largely solved. Real-time speaking is the part that's left: it's timing, voice, and presence, with no draft to fix first.
GenAI & L2 writing, Innovation in Language Learning, 2025 ↗A judgment-free partner is what lets anxious speakers actually speak
Fear of being judged is one of the strongest things that silences learners — and studies find AI conversation partners measurably reduce speaking anxiety, attributing it to the non-judgmental setting. Lower anxiety is what unlocks the English you already have.

What the evidence supports — and what we build for — is lower anxiety, activating English you already understand, and growing fluency and confidence. We don't claim to "fix your grammar" or promise a test score. That's not what the research backs, and not what we sell.
Frequently asked questions
What is Talk to Samantha?
Talk to Samantha is a hands-free AI English conversation partner. You have a real, spoken conversation about your everyday life, and afterward you get a structured feedback report that shows more natural ways to say what you actually said. It's built around genuine conversation, not lessons or drills.
Who is it for? Is it good for beginners?
It's for non-native speakers who already understand some English but want to speak it more naturally and confidently. You choose a level — beginner, intermediate, or advanced — and Samantha adjusts how she speaks and what she suggests. Beginners are welcome; the level setting keeps the conversation understandable.
I understand English but can't speak it — can this help?
Yes — that's exactly what Samantha is for. Understanding and speaking are different skills: you can follow English but still freeze when you have to produce it in real time. The only fix is actually saying it, and a conversation with Samantha gives you that, plus a feedback report with sharper ways to say what you were reaching for.
I get nervous and freeze when I speak English — will this help?
That's the most common reason people stay silent, and it's where an AI partner helps most: no one is judging you, there are no social stakes, and you can stumble or restart as much as you need. Studies find judgment-free AI conversation measurably lowers speaking anxiety — and lower anxiety is what lets the English you already know come out.
I don't have anyone to practice speaking English with. Does that matter?
No — Samantha is your partner, available anytime, with no tutor to book and nothing to schedule. It's more useful than talking to yourself because it actually talks back, keeps the conversation going, and draws out longer answers — then shows you better ways to say what you said.
How is it different from Speak, ELSA, or a tutor?
Apps like Speak offer a wide variety of structured curriculums and drills, and a tutor gives you scheduled lessons. Talk to Samantha is the opposite: no fixed curriculum and nothing to schedule — you just talk freely about your life, and it turns your own words into better English afterward. It's less a course than a patient, always-available conversation friend.
How is it different from just talking to ChatGPT or Gemini voice?
General voice assistants will chat, but they won't reliably keep you talking, match their speaking pace to your level, or help you improve from what you said. Samantha slows down for beginners and picks up as you grow, draws out longer speech, and afterward upgrades what you said — sharper phrasings of your own ideas, why they're stronger, and key expressions to reuse. That after-conversation upgrade is the difference.
Is this a course with lessons and levels to pass?
No. There are no lessons, units, or tests to pass. You set a proficiency level once (and can change it anytime), and everything else is just conversation plus feedback. Progress comes from talking often, not from finishing a curriculum.
What should I talk about with Samantha?
Anything from your everyday life — your day, your work, weekend plans, an opinion, whatever's on your mind. Samantha is genuinely curious and easy to talk to, so the conversation just flows — and the more you enjoy it, the more you end up speaking. Think of her as a patient, friendly companion to talk with in English — not a tool for looking things up, and not a romantic partner.
Do I have to type or press a button to talk?
No — it's fully hands-free. You tap start once, then just speak naturally. Samantha handles turn-taking and even lets you interrupt, like a real conversation. That's why it works while you're driving, walking, or doing chores.
What is the feedback report, and when do I get it?
It's a short report generated right after your conversation ends. It takes things you actually said and shows sharper, more natural ways to express the same idea — with a note on why each is better. You can review the full transcript and play any turn back.
Can I go back to my past conversations?
Yes. Your previous conversations are saved, so you can revisit any of them anytime — reread the feedback report, look through the full transcript, and replay the audio. It's easy to pick up an expression from an earlier session and reuse it.
What are "speech upgrades" and "key expressions"?
An upgrade is a more natural version of something you said, starting from your own idea rather than a generic rule. Key expressions are the useful words or phrases inside that upgrade, explained in simpler English with an example — so a new phrase becomes something you understand and can reuse, not just noise.
Can I talk hands-free while driving or doing dishes?
Yes — that's a core use case. Once a conversation starts, you never need to touch the screen. It works with your phone speaker, headphones, AirPods, or CarPlay, so you can practice during a commute or while your hands are busy.
What if I lose signal or get a phone call mid-conversation?
Samantha handles it. If your connection drops, it reconnects automatically and picks the conversation back up. If a phone call or Siri interrupts, the session pauses and resumes cleanly afterward — so it's safe to rely on while you're on the go, like during a commute.
Does it remember me between conversations?
Yes. Samantha keeps a lightweight memory across sessions, so conversations build on each other instead of starting from zero every time. You can review and manage what she remembers in the app.
What are the proficiency levels, and how do they change things?
There are three: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Your level changes how Samantha speaks — vocabulary, pace, and complexity — and how ambitious the feedback upgrades are, so they stay just above your current level without leaving you behind. You can switch levels anytime in Settings.
Is there a free trial? How much is free?
Yes. You get 10 minutes free, one time, with the full experience — real conversation plus the feedback report. No subscription is required to try it, and there's no credit card to start.
How much does it cost?
After the free trial, Talk to Samantha uses affordable minute-pack plans. Pricing depends on your region and can change, so check the current prices on the App Store — that's always the up-to-date source.
Isn't it expensive compared to unlimited English apps?
It only looks pricey next to an unlimited English app. Those apps give you a wide curriculum and drills; Samantha focuses on a real conversation about your life, with feedback on your own words — and the fair comparison for that is a tutor. A 1-on-1 tutor costs about $20–50 an hour, and a single lesson can cost more than a whole month with Samantha — with no booking, no nerves in front of a person, a full record of every conversation, and unlimited upgrades and replays. Check the App Store for current pricing.
Why minute packs instead of unlimited?
Because what matters is depth, not raw minutes. Real-time voice has a real cost per minute, so packs keep the entry price low — and only your speaking time is metered; the feedback reports, unlimited sentence upgrades, and audio replays are all included. A focused 10–20-minute conversation plus its report does more than an hour of aimless chat, so you're buying improvement, not just talk time.
What happens when my minutes run out mid-conversation?
The conversation winds down gracefully rather than cutting off abruptly — you'll be told your time is ending, and you still get your feedback report for the part you completed. You can add more time whenever you're ready.
How do I cancel my subscription?
Manage everything through your Apple ID, like any App Store subscription: open Settings on your iPhone, tap your name → Subscriptions → Talk to Samantha, and cancel anytime. Canceling keeps your access until the end of the current billing period, and deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.
Can I switch between plans? What happens to my minutes?
Yes — change plans anytime in your Apple ID subscription settings. Upgrading to a bigger plan takes effect immediately: your balance refreshes to the new plan's full minutes right away, and Apple automatically refunds the unused time on your old plan. Because of that refund, leftover minutes from the old plan don't carry over — you start the new plan fresh. Downgrading to a smaller plan takes effect at your next renewal, so your current plan and minutes stay until then.
Can I get a refund?
Refunds for App Store purchases are handled by Apple, not by us — request one at reportaproblem.apple.com, or in Settings → your name → Subscriptions, subject to Apple's refund policy. If something went wrong during a session, contact support and we'll do our best to help.
Are my voice recordings stored on your servers?
Your audio is streamed in real time to power the live conversation, but we don't keep your voice recordings in the cloud — the recordings stay on your device. We do store the text transcript and the feedback derived from it so your history and progress work. See the Privacy Policy for the full detail.
How do I delete my account and data?
You can delete your account and its data from inside the app, in Settings. Deletion removes your conversations, transcripts, feedback, and memory, and revokes the Sign in with Apple connection. On-device recordings are wiped from your device.
What do I need to use it?
An iPhone — Talk to Samantha is an iOS app, available only on the App Store (there's no Android version). You sign in with your Apple ID, so there's no separate account or password; grant microphone access at your first conversation, and you're ready to talk.
