Note on language. The Korean-language version of this Privacy Policy is the authoritative and binding version. This English text is provided as a convenience translation only. If there is any discrepancy between the Korean and English versions, the Korean version prevails. The authoritative Korean policy also sets out the full details of our processing entrustment, cross-border transfers, retention periods, and Privacy Officer required under Korean law.
This policy explains what data Samantha collects, how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices you have. Samantha is a hands-free AI English‑conversation app for users aged 14 and older: you have a spoken conversation, and afterward you get a written feedback report. We built it to collect only what the product needs — there is no advertising and no tracking.
1. Data we collect
Account and identity. When you sign in with Apple, we receive a stable user identifier and your email address (which may be an Apple private relay address if you chose "Hide My Email"). We do not collect your name.
Your voice and conversation. During a session, your microphone audio is streamed in real time to our AI provider (Google) to power the conversation. We also keep the text transcript of the conversation so you can review it and so we can generate your feedback.
AI‑generated content about your speech. The feedback report, the expression "upgrades," and the cross‑session "memory" that lets Samantha remember context are generated from your own speech and stored with your account.
Audio recordings (on your device only). Session recordings and the audio of feedback playback are stored only on your device, not on our servers. We keep just a pointer to them.
Purchases and usage. Your subscription/trial status, and usage information such as session times and durations, which we use to run the minute meter and operate the service.
Which features you use. Timestamps recording when you open your own feedback report and when you re‑open a saved expression "upgrade." We use these to understand which parts of the App people actually find and use, so we can improve them. These are simple timestamps on your own content — not a record of everything you tap, and never shared with other companies.
Diagnostics. Error reports the app sends us when something fails, and crash reports provided through Apple, used to keep the App reliable.
Device identifier. A random identifier generated by the app for this install, used to manage on‑device storage. It is not a hardware identifier and not an advertising identifier, and it resets if you reinstall.
Support messages. If you contact support from within the App, we receive your message and reply to your email address.
Network information. Like any online service, our infrastructure providers briefly process your IP address and request metadata to operate the service and protect against abuse.
2. How we use your data
We use the data above only to provide and operate the App: to power the live conversation, generate your feedback and memory, maintain your subscription and minute balance, respond to support, and keep the service secure and reliable. We also use the feature‑use timestamps described above to understand which features are useful and improve the App. We do not use your data for advertising or to build profiles for marketing.
Service emails. We use your email address to send you two kinds of message about the service itself: a short welcome when you create your account, and a note when the feedback from a conversation is ready to read. The feedback email includes one example from that report — something you said and a more natural way to say it — so the message is useful on its own; the rest stays in the App. These are service notifications, not marketing: they carry no advertising, no offers, and no discounts. You can stop them at any time using the link in the footer of any email, and doing so changes nothing else about your account.
3. Who we share data with (service providers)
We share data only with the service providers we need to run Samantha. We do not sell your data or share it with data brokers.
- Google (Gemini API) — processes your voice, transcripts, and related text to power the conversation and generate feedback. On the paid Gemini API that we use, Google states it does not use your prompts or responses to train its models, and retains them only for a limited period for safety, abuse prevention, and legal compliance.
- Supabase — our database and authentication provider (hosted in Seoul, South Korea), stores your account and conversation data.
- Apple — Sign in with Apple, and App Store / StoreKit for purchases.
- Fly.io — hosts our backend (Tokyo, Japan).
- Google Workspace — handles our support email.
- Resend — delivers the service emails described in Section 2. It receives your email address and the content of the message. Because the feedback email quotes one example from your own report, that quoted text passes through Resend and appears in its delivery logs, which are retained for 30 days. Only that one example leaves the App — never your full transcript or your recordings.
Because these providers operate in various regions, your data may be processed outside your country of residence. The authoritative Korean policy lists the recipient, destination country, and purpose for each cross-border transfer.
4. Tracking and advertising
Samantha does not track you. We do not use third‑party advertising, we do not share your data with other companies' apps or websites for advertising, and we do not work with data brokers. Accordingly, in Apple's terms, none of your data is "used to track you."
Measuring how our own App is used — such as the feature‑use timestamps in section 1 — is separate from that. It stays with us, is tied only to your own account, and is never combined with data from other companies or used to follow you elsewhere.
Our marketing website (talktosamantha.app) uses Vercel Web Analytics, a privacy‑friendly, cookieless analytics tool that measures aggregate page views and traffic sources. It sets no cookies, stores no IP addresses, and uses no advertising trackers; the data is anonymous and cannot identify you or follow you across other sites.
5. Data retention and deletion
You can delete your account at any time from within the App (Settings → Delete Account). This permanently deletes your account and its associated data from our systems, removes your on‑device recordings, and revokes the App's Sign in with Apple access.
One exception — free‑trial and promotional‑offer abuse prevention. To enforce our one‑time free trial and one‑time promotional offers (such as promo codes), we retain a pseudonymous identifier — a salted one‑way hash derived from your Apple sign‑in — that lets us recognize whether a free trial or promotional offer has already been granted. Because its purpose is to recognize a returning person, we treat this identifier as personal data. It is retained on the lawful basis of preventing fraud and abuse of our one‑time offers, is stored separately from the rest of your account data, and is deliberately kept even after you delete your account, solely for this abuse‑prevention purpose. It is not used for any other purpose, cannot be used to recover any deleted data, and is retained only for as long as necessary for this purpose.
6. Security
We protect your data in transit with encryption (HTTPS/TLS), authenticate every request, and limit access to the minimum necessary to operate the service. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information.
7. Children
Samantha is intended for users aged 14 and older and is not directed to children under 14. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 14.
8. Your choices and rights
- Delete everything: use Settings → Delete Account in the App.
- Stop our emails: use the "Stop these emails" link in the footer of any email we send. It takes effect immediately and needs no sign‑in.
- Access or questions: contact us at support@talktosamantha.app.
- Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights over your data (such as access, correction, or deletion); contact us to exercise them.
9. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy. We will revise the "Effective date" above and, for material changes, provide notice as appropriate.
